I wrote about how “We should all be feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was one of my favorite reads of this year. I was planning to write a review of that book but somehow could not.
I am pasting here my most favorite lines from that book where she explains why we need the word “feminist” –
“Some people ask, ‘Why the word feminist? Why not just say you are a believer in human rights, or something like that?’ Because that would be dishonest. Feminism is, of course, part of human rights in general – but to choose to use the vague expression human rights is to deny the specific and particular problem of gender. It would be a way of pretending that it was not women who have, for centuries, been excluded. It would be a way of denying that the problem targets women. That the problem was not about being human, but specifically about being a female human”
I think every single human should read this book or at least listen to the TedTalk which is available on youtube. She is really an amazing person.

In the past, that word was about equal rights. Nowadays, it’s more about justifying anything and everything. Of course, there are feminists trying to fight for equal rights even today, but I am afraid their tribe is reducing.

Yeah some people misuse that term but there is still an issue with gender. Women are paid less for the same job even in US 😦

Your title intrigued me… I don’t usually read books of this sort but I am thinking of trying.
On a separate note, I was thinking on writing on how I see feminism being perceived in a real-life basis. There are so much nuances to this.

Try watching the TedTalk. She is a great orator too. She made some valid points which I feel especially those against feminism should understand.

Yes, I’ll definitely watch it. I want the argument from both sides, why feminism is required vs to weed out those who misuse the idea of it.

This book (e-book) was with me for so long but one day I just opened it on the spur of the moment. I could not put it down. It resonated with me. It didn’t matter where you were from, all women can connect with the theme. I loved this book so much!

There is another book by this author called “Dear Ijeawele or feminist manifesto”. Do try that book as it is equally good.
