Startide Rising – Book Review

I will be attending Baycon this year which is a Bay Area Science Fiction Convention. I heard about this convention when I attended Worldcon last year. David Brin is going to be attending the convention and there are multiple panels that he will be taking part in. I thought this would be a perfect time to read one of his novels. I read Startide Rising which is the second book in his Uplift novels. It seems you can skip the first book and directly jump onto the second book in the series. Both the second part and third part in this series won Hugo awards.

Standalone Fantasy Novels

Most of the time when we come across a fantasy novel, it will be part of some series. There are hardly any standalone fantasy novels written. I sometimes prefer standalone novels as these days I don’t have enough time to sit and finish 8-10 books of 1200 pages each. Life has gotten so busy that it is difficult for me to focus on any book which is longer than 500 pages these days.

Here are some standalone fantasy novels that I have read or would like to read in the near future.

Game of Thrones Finale : Rant

This post is full of spoilers so if you have not watched the finale of Game of Thrones, please come back to this post later.

I saw the last episode yesterday and was furious. The plot was getting ridiculous right after the books ended but I still had some hopes. Last night’s episode was a disaster. Probably the worst ending one could ever come up with.

Nothing made sense. These are the questions in my head –

Trail of Lightning: Book Review

I read Trail of Lightning this month as part of the readalong hosted by Wyrd and Wonder hosts. I could not read along with others and could not discuss the book on the dates chosen by the hosts. I knew this month was going to be hectic at work, so I sped through the book in the beginning of this month when I had some free time. I have been too busy with a new project at work and have been unable to blog. I will not be able to blog much for the next couple of months I guess. This is the only book I have read so far from my fantasy TBR. But I am glad I was able to finish at least one book.

April Reading Wrap Up

April wasn’t such a good reading month for me. I went on vacation, work got really busy to the point of giving me headaches (literally) and I spent a lot of time outside basking in the spring sun. After the terrible winter, I was happy to be able to go to parks and do some outdoor activities. I enrolled my kid in a soccer class and evenings are spent either there or in the park. Because of this, my reading time got cut short. I am also trying to sleep early these days so that I can wake up early in the morning.

I went on a trip to Portland and got to visit Powell’s Bookstore, which is considered world’s biggest bookstore. I will have a detailed post up on that bookstore along with some pics. I bought three books there. See how good I am getting these days at resisting myself? Few years back, I would have bought 13 books from a bookstore that huge and amazing. Now I have developed a lot of self control. I read two out of these three books in April.
