Books to read in 2017

I never make a tbr (to-be-read) as I usually read depending on my mood. I pick books sometimes just to find that I am not in a mood to read them. But this year, I wanted to make a list just for my own reference. This list will help me understand which books are top priority on my shelf. I may not be able to read all these in 2017 and may have to push some of these to 2018. But I just wanted to have a list that I could refer to if I was unsure what book to read next.

I have way too many unread books on my shelf. I had reduced that number this year and then again went on a buying spree which resulted in lot of unread books. I am not worried though as I always wanted to own a huge library of my own so I am already on the way.

I am also planning to participate in Vintage Sci-fi event in January (hosted by Little Red Reviewer) for which most of these sci-fi books will work as they were all published before 1979. Also I am planning to make 2017 a sci-fi year and want to read more sci-fi than anything else.The books that I am planning to read in 2017 are –

• Foundation series – I have read the original trilogy already so this will be a reread. Along with that, I am planning to read all the prequels and sequels to this series. This is one of my favorite series ever and I was blown away when I read the trilogy many years back. I am not sure if my opinion is going to change when I read it again. I read “The Lord of the rings” again this year and liked it even more than I did the first time so I am hoping that would be the case with this series as well. This book has science fiction, politics, mystery, intergalactic empire and everything that I love.

• The man in the high castle by Philip K. Dick – I started reading this book this year and must have read 40-50 pages and I liked the part that I read. I then kept it aside to read some other book but my curiosity is making me want to pick up the book again. I watched the first episode of the TV series and want to watch the rest once I am done with this book. This book talks about an alternate history where Germany and Japan won the second world war, instead of the allies.
• Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein – Heinlein along with Clarke and Asimov, is considered one of the three fathers of Sci-fi. Since I am already a fan of the other two, I am curious to see how I will find Heinlein’s books. I am planning to read this book in January for Vintage Sci-fi. This one is on top of my tbr list. I have not read many military sci-fi books so I am intrigued.
• Ringworld by Larry Niven – This is another author that I am very much interested in. I have not read anything by him and want to start with this book soon.
• The Forever War by Joe Haldeman – I have read couple of chapters from this book and liked whatever I have read so far. This book was on my tbr for november but somehow I could not read it. I want to definitely read it in 2017.

• Solaris by Stanislaw Lem – This book is considered one of the best sci-fi novels ever. I have not seen the movie too which I want to watch after reading the book. I am planning to read the book and then watch the movie in 2017.
• Dune by Frank Herbert – Being a huge sci-fi fan, I have not read Dune. I am ashamed to admit that. This is considered the best sci-fi novel ever by most of the sci-fi fans so I have to read this book soon. But the only reason for not reading it is that this book is huge and bulky. It intimidates me with its size.
• The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene – I got a copy of this book some 5-6 years back and I still have not read it. I watched Greene talk on Nova about string theory and ever since I saw that show, I have been wanting to read it. I have to read this book in 2017.
• The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov – Again, another book which was sitting on my shelf from 5-6 years. I tried to read this when I bought it, but for some reason I was not in the mood for it. This is considered Asimov’s best novel by many people so I have to read it soon. I also heard this is one of the best time travel books ever written.

• Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb – I consider myself a huge fantasy literature fan and I still have not read anything by Robin Hobb. I can’t believe it. I have to read something by her this year and if I like it, I would like to finish this series in 2017.
• The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch – I had planned on reading this book this year but somehow could not as I suddenly lost interest in fantasy somewhere in mid-2016 for unknown reasons. I have to read this book and other books in this series soon.
• Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie – I have heard nothing but good things about this book. Everyone seems to like it and it has won Hugo and Nebula awards. I have to read it soon. Also any story with space and space shuttles, I am in.
• The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell – I think I read one or two chapters in this book and loved them so much! The beginning itself was mind blowing. I am not sure why I did not continue reading this book. This book is about Vikings and I have to read it soon and also watch the TV series after I am done. I also want to read all the books in the series.

I also have few classics that I want to get to this year –

• Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte – I can’t believe that I have not read this classic yet. I did read around 50 pages I think and totally loved it. The writing was phenomenal. Probably one of the most well written books I have ever read. I have to finish this book.
• Little Women by Louisa May Alcott – I read few chapters but found them to be boring. That is the reason why I have not picked this book again. But I do want to force myself to finish it as so many people like it. I am hoping that it gets better as we progress.

These won’t definitely be the only books that I read in 2017. I am going to choose books depending on my mood for sure. But I want to finish some of these books atleast in 2017. And maybe complete all these by 2018/2019.
