Dark Matter – Book Review #RRSciFiMonth

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch is a fast paced science fiction thriller about multiverses published this year (2016). I saw mixed reviews of this book so I initially thought I will not get a hard copy and instead read an ebook. I read some 25% of the book and lost interest. I then realized few days back that maybe it was because of the format of the book that I did not enjoy it much, as these days I am not able to read on Kindle for some reason (just don’t feel like reading on it). This week I got a hard copy of this book and finished reading it this weekend. And you know what, I absolutely loved it.

This is about a man called Jason, an ordinary professor who is quite happy with his wife and son. The story starts when Jason goes to the bar to congratulate his friend Ryan, who has just received a prestigious award for his contributions to science. Jason could have probably done more than what Ryan did, had he not been married. And then he ends up in a different universe where he was not married and had no kids but is extremely successful professionally.

I have always wondered how my life would have turned out had I not come to US or had I not married etc. If even you’ve had such thoughts sometime in your life, then please read this book.

So this book talks about Quantum mechanics superposition and fifth dimension which is a very interesting science topic.

“The Many-Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics posits that all possible realities exist. That everything which has a probability of happening is happening”.

So maybe in some Universe, I did not even start this blog. Maybe in a different Universe, I was uneducated and could not read or write. Maybe in some Universe, I did not meet my husband and never had my son – which is too scary to even think of. This is such an exciting theory about which I want to read more.

There is some amount of science in this book so if you are someone who finds science boring, I wouldn’t suggest picking this book. But this book is so much more – it has romance, love and loss at the center of it.

I could not put this book down for even a minute. I just had to know what was going to happen. This is probably the best book I have read this year. It starts off slow but after about 25% of the book, things start getting really crazy. Some of the reviews that I had read spoiled the suspense for me, but still there were many more twists which I was not aware of. A perfect thriller which reminded of Michael Crichton’s books. This book is as amazing as The Martian. But this one is mind boggling like Interstellar movie. Story was unique, not done before in any other novel.

Definitely one of the best science fiction novels I have ever read. I want someone to produce a movie based on this book as it will make a great movie.

  1. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I picked up and finished the book last night, in a single sitting- the plot was so intriguing and the story, with the science and the underlying human emotions (or is it fallacies), simply sucked me in. After ‘The Martian’, this has to be one of my best science fiction reads this year!

  2. I’m always fascinated by this topic! The idea of alternate realities and what would happen if we made different choices. I always thought of this author as more of a horror/ thriller writer but after reading Wayward Pines and seeing reviews of this, I definitely want to read it.
