Pride and Prejudice

I am one of those few people (women) who did not like Pride and Prejudice novel. I know it is weird since everyone seems to like it.

I remember reading it for the first time when I was in high school after a friend recommended it to me. I found it extremely boring and I could not understand why people liked it so much. I still own that copy of this book. Recently (4 years back), I again tried reading the book. I thought since I was matured enough to understand the story, I might like it. But again after reading first few pages, I gave up thinking it was boring. I could not understand why women liked Mr. Darcy or Lizzy so much. I quit the 2005 movie adaptation midway as it was boring, while the husband slept off while watching the movie. It was that boring.

I never knew why it was so famous. That was until I saw the 1995 BBC adaptation of the novel. I know I am quite late in the game. But I completed the 6 part TV series yesterday and I have to say this – I LOVE IT! I never thought I would say this but I loved the series and now I understand all the hype around this story.

I fell in love with Mr. Darcy. Colin Firth is so amazing in this series. I have seen him in Bridget Jones’s diary, which I now realize is a rehash of this book. He was fantastic in King’s speech but in this series, he was dashingly handsome. So good looking and I have no words to describe his acting skills. Even Jennifer Ehle as Lizzy was wonderful. Her acting was top notch. No wonder this series is so famous.

I want to watch the proposal scene all over again.

Oh Mr. Darcy! I feel like watching this series all over again. And I will. Very soon.

I am now planning to read the book again. Who knows, I might love it this time. I have also seen “Sense and Sensibility” movie and I loved it. So I want to read other novels by Jane Austen to see if I will like them. Have you read or watched Pride and Prejudice?

  1. It’s amazing what a good film or TV adaptation can do to a book. I think I would have hated Tess of the D’urbervilles if it weren’t for that TV adaptation starring Eddie Redmayne back along. I’ve never tried reading Pride and Prejudice but I watched the Sense and Sensibility film with Kate Winslet in it and loved it so I read the book and liked that too. Maybe I’ll have a stab at Pride and Prejudice. Great post!

  2. I am reading Pride & Prejudice right now (and loving it) – will see the movie adaption as I finish. The BBC thing is a tele-series? Do you have a link?

  3. I loved this book. All the characters are realistic and fleshed out except Mr. Darcy, who I guess has been made unrealistic deliberately for commercial purposes. For the first time, I realized how a character-driven novel can be engaging!

  4. I love pride and prejudice book. Yes, I belong to the group who loves Mr.Darcy 😀 I feel the 2005 movie was not as good as the book, but I haven’t watched BBC adaptation. I’m sure going to binge watch the series. 🙂

  5. Every time I saw your rating on Goodreads it broke my heart. P&P is not just one of my favorite classics but is one of my Top 5 books of all time. I love it so. Mr. Darcy was and will probably be my only literary crush. I am so glad you liked the adaptation. I now have hope to convert you into a Mr. Darcy girl :P. Btw, I have returned to blogging :).
