Top ten best books I read in 2015

Today’s topic at Broke and Bookish is to list the top ten best books that I read this year. I wanted to do this post anyway. I read 47 books his year and I am currently reading two more books which I will most likely finish reading before 2016 begins.

These are the ten books –

  1. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck – I wanted to read a book by this author from a long time. Finally I read one of his books this year and it was one of the best books I have ever read. It is a touching tale about two friends who work in a farm in California. I need to read other books by this author soon.
  2. The girl on the train by Paula Hawkins – This book has been compared to “Gone girl” and that made me pick this book. Even though I did not exactly love “Gone girl”, as I did not find it suspenseful, it was still a good book about screwed up people. This book also talks about people who are far from perfect and it is also a thriller in true sense. I was able to guess the suspense element in the book once I reached about 80% of the book, but still I am happy that it kept me guessing for so long. Also it had me hooked till the end. Story never got boring for even a minute. One of the best books I have read this year. Looks like a movie is coming out soon based on this book.
  3. Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams – I have already reviewed this book here.
  4. The Science of Interstellar by Kip Thorne – it had some interesting concepts. I enjoyed reading the book but the science concepts are too complicated. Author has briefly explained some of them without going too deep. So there were many ideas that I did not understand since one or two paragraphs described them. I need to read the book again with Google and probably few science books by my side. It is more like a movie companion than a science book.
  5. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo – For a “Monica”-like person who loves to have everything organized, this book was an enjoyable read. What was great about the book was that many tips given in the book are being followed by me even before getting hold of this book. But I did get some more tips for tidying the house and I already have few bags of items ready to discard after reading the book. Great read for people who like to be organized and want to keep their house tidy. I waited for almost 2 months to get this book from the library. The waiting list still has 30+ people waiting for it! It is one of the most read books this year.
  6. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King – Great book with some great tips for writing well. Hope to put some of them to use soon. It is a must read for anyone who loves to write. This book mostly talks about writing fiction. My first book written by Stephen King and I am already regretting for not having read any book by him. I must muster some courage and read one of his horror books soon.

  1. The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, #2) and The Death Cure (Maze Runner, #3) by James Dashner – This is one of those very few series where the books get better as you progress through the series. It was terrifying and had nail biting adventure. I could not put the book down for a minute without thinking what was gonna happen to Thomas and his friends. I loved the climax and how the series ended. The dystopian world created by Dashner was amazing. I will definitely read other books by this author.
  2. Old School (Diary of a Wimpy Kid #10) by Jeff Kinney – I loved all the books in this series and this new one was pretty good too.
  3. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (The Tales of Dunk and Egg, #1-3) by George R.R.Martin – I have not finished reading this book yet but it has already turned into a favorite. It is just as amazing as his other books are.
  4. Humans of New York: Stories by Brandon Stanton – I am still reading this book too but it will definitely make the top ten list for this year. I have been following HONY page for quite sometime and love it. I did not buy the previous books by Brandon as they only had photos. This book has stories along with the photos and I am loving it.

  1. I have to start this – make a habit of listing which ones I liked best…

  2. During college, I started walking around my living room for many minutes while still sleeping. I have never before (or after) walked in sleep. That day, I had read a couple of hundred pages of Stephen King’s novel. I think you should know this before picking up his horror books 😛

  3. Damn cool! I should make my list too. The girl on the train sounds interesting.
Just out of curiosity, are you a Kindle person or a hardcopy person?

  4. You didn’t buy HONY because it had only pictures? Very odd. The pictures for me in HONY were enough to speak a story on their own. 🙂 I feel you’ve missed a good book, Avada.

    1. Pictures are definitely great and speak a story on their own, which was the primary reason for following HONY blog. But I did not feel like buying them paying $$ as I don’t have much use for a book with just pictures. Once he started interviewing people, I started liking it even more as it was interesting to know something about the person along with their photo. That’s one of the reasons why I loved this book so much, there are so many happy and tear-jerking stories here.

  5. I read On Writing this year too – my first Stephen King book, and I loved it. I have stayed away from The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, as I am working on keeping my inner Monica in control. 😛 Will certainly pick up The Girl on the Train in 2016. 🙂
