One Republic

For some reason, I like boy bands a lot when it comes to music. I remember liking Backstreet boys to start with. They were the first American band that I loved. And then there were many but I never loved a band that much. I would listen to few songs and then move on to some other band. I guess Savage Garden was probably the only band that I really liked. I even had a post on them here.

If you ask any Indian guy, he will say he listens to Linkin park. I have no idea why Indian men only listen to that band or is it that they know only one band in the whole world or probably it is to sound cool. I don’t see Indians appreciating other bands which are better than Linkin Park. I love other bands like Nickelback too. Most guys who listen to bands other than Linkin Park talk about heavy metal or hard rock, but being a girl I like softer music. I can never listen to bands like Metallica. I like music which won’t hurt my ears or give me headache. 😛

Of late, I have taken liking to this band from Colorado, USA. They call themselves One Republic and I love almost all their songs.

This band was formed in 2002 by Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins. The other people who are part of this band are Eddie Fisher, Brent Kutzle and Drew Brown.

So far they have come out with 3 albums and I love all the 3 albums:

1. Native (2013)

2. Waking up (2009)

3. Dreaming out loud (2007)

I first heard their song  “Apologize” on radio and it has been my favourite song ever since I heard it. I fell in love with the band right after I heard this song.

“You tell me that you’re sorry,
Didn’t think I’d turn around
And say…
That it’s too late to apologize.
It’s too late…”

My recent favourite has been – “Counting Stars“. I love listening to this song in a loop. This song has been very popular and it is played often on radio. I love love love the lyrics too.

“Old, but I’m not that old
Young, but I’m not that bold”

“I feel something so right
By doing the wrong thing
And I feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing”

Another favourite of mine is : “If I Lose Myself“.

“I stared up at the sun,
Thought of all of the people, places and things I’ve loved.
I stared up just to see
With all of the faces, you were the one next to me.”

Good Life” has a very nice tune to it. I love the stanza where “hopelessly” is repeated:

“Hopelessly
I feel like there might be something that I’ll miss
Hopelessly
I feel like the window closes oh so quick
Hopelessly
I’m taking a mental picture of you now
‘Cause hopelessly
The hope is we have so much to feel good about”

There are many other songs by this band that I have come to love: “All The Right Moves“, “Secrets“, “Stop And Stare“,  “Feel again“,  “Marchin On“. I heard this song recently and found it good too – “Something I need“.

I want to see what songs they come up in future. My dream is to attend at least one concert of theirs. Last time they were in town, I was dumb enough to not attend it.

Have you listened to any of their songs? If so, which one is your favourite?

  1. I heard counting stars – it’s nice 🙂

I am not even aware of that Linkin Park. I am only familiar with a (very few) songs of Backstreet Boys – I love the ‘I want it that way…’ song. I had it recorded in an empty cassette before some 20 years! 🙂

    1. I like few songs by Pink Floyd. I owned one of their audio CDs if I remember. I have heard Stairway to Heaven but not sure if I have heard the others. I will listen to the others. And I don’t like RHCP for some reason.

  4. I think I’ve only heard Apologise…a long time ago. It was ok…not really my kind of music. I’m into Linkin Park and similar music…for real! 😀 Used to be into Boyzone, BSB and Westlife when I was younger but my tastes have changed. I love a lot of Aussie rock bands…

But yeah, I reckon if you love a band, it’s always great to watch them in concert. Absolutely love live bands!

  5. Haha, after I read you asking if Indians only knew Linkin Park, I could imagine what you went through. BlackStreet boys and Linkin Park made way into Indians after Boney M craze and typically the were ready for something new and different. My dad still enjoys Boney M and I bought many songs only for him.

One thing I know is Indians would prefer to hear another band only if there is something great about them or if they are famous. They would not experiment, but get curious when a song or an album is a hit in their locality. Akon got his break in India through Lonely, which was played so many times on local radio stations.

Typically, we Indians only have known English/International music after they become hits. Because if it becomes a hit, it is widely available and it would reach their ears. That could explain why many stuck to LinkinPark and Backstreet boys. 😉
