Tidbits from real life – 1

Ever imagined how interesting life was when there were no mobile phones available in market. These days, you are in a meeting with your boss and suddenly cell starts ringing at the top volume. It does not ring when you are sitting idle ‘facebook’ing… err.. we should add this word to the dictionary, what say? Just like ‘orkut’ing, ‘twitter’ing or is it called tweeting? Then there are some souls that get hurt because you did not call back or pick their call.

There was a time in college when I was part of a girls gang, which involved 4 girls, including me. It so happened once that we planned to watch a movie together, the day our exams got over. Out of the 4 of us, 3 of us (D, C and me) had our own vehicles but only one of us (i.e D) knew the route to the theater. The rest of us were supposed to follow her. And so we started our journey with D leading the way. Then the inevitable happened, we got separated because of the traffic. D turned left and C went straight at a high speed, without bothering to check on others and I was wondering whom to follow. C obviously did not know the way and so there was no point following her. So I went behind D but after a while, lost her at a signal again since she zoomed past the traffic and was nowhere to be seen. In those days, we did not carry mobile phones, since they were brick sized and costly to afford. Finally feeling disgusted I came home. D reached the theater along with the 4th girl as her pillion and wondered where the others went. She waited for quite sometime and once the show started, went home after dropping the other girl home. C went home too since she did not know where the theater was. After coming home disappointed, I called D and C to their residence numbers. By that time, they had reached home and it was time for blaming each other for getting lost 🙂 We had no choice but to plan for the movie next day. This time we chose a theater to which everyone knew the way and decided to meet outside the theater. And this time we successfully watched the movie. So much for following a person without having a cell phone 😀 This is one of those incidents that I can never forget and my mom ends up laughing every time I remind her about ‘how’ I watched a movie with my friends 🙂

There were times when my dad would come in search of me, since I was late and thus embarrass me in front of my friends. Grr.. Thankfully now that I have a mobile, I call them up and inform that I am getting late.

I loved the gang that I had and the movies that we watched together by bunking classes 🙂 Once so happened that we wanted to watch some Rani Mukerjee’s movie but some silly Kareena’s movie was also getting screened in that theater. We checked the timings and decided to go for matinee show since Rani’s movie was being screened. All other shows were Kareena’s. Two of our friends said they will buy the tickets and wait for us outside the theater. The rest of us happily went to the theater late. The two girls who were there already told that Rani’s movie was being screened in the 2nd show and Kareena’s in the matinee and so we had no choice but to watch Kareena’s. We scolded the two of them for buying tickets for such a stupid movie and entered the hall. Only after the movie started, did we realize that we had been tricked and fooled. The movie indeed was Rani’s.

If you are just back from US, you do lot of weird things that makes people think you are insane. Need some examples? I press 2 expecting to land on 3rd floor, since ground floor is 1st floor in US. And then I get down from the elevator and realize I am on the wrong floor, get inside the elevator again and press 3 this time 🙂  I divide everything by 50 and think everything’s cheap. Typical situation – oh this costs just Rs.50, that’s just $1. It will cost $3 in US, take it, it’s very cheap. Gosh!! I guess I will need more time to get adjusted to Rupees 😦sell-investments-to-pay-debt

Ever since I opened a bank account, I am being harassed with phone calls asking me to take a credit card. You pick up the phone when you are driving or when you are in a meeting, thinking it might be important and all that you hear is “I am calling from xyz bank where you have an account, we have a lifetime free card for you”. What the hell is a lifetime card supposed to mean? lifetime of what? These days I bang the phone saying “I don’t need any credit card”. I was thinking of writing to the bank to stop torturing me for opening an account with them.

    1. 🙂 Yeah I could have asked but then it would have been tedious. The theater was pretty far and I had never been to that area alone. Instead I felt like going back home 🙂

  1. I can relate to your experience. Every time I and my friends were lost we would actually give messages to their and own family members just in case they called. Lot of things have changed since the onset of cellphone devices.

Do register for (Do Not Disturb)DND in case you don’t want to be bugged 🙂

    1. Yeah those were the days when moms would act like they work for BPOs 🙂 But I still like calling someone on landline if I can, when compared to cell phones.

Oh DND? Do we have that option? Let me check with my carrier then.
      Thanks Survivor 🙂

  2. ha ha ha… you people got lost… u know in the olden days of celliphone, it was so easy to avoid someone, just tell your parents you not at home and no bothering,

Now its like phone is you and I don’t carry a cell phone with me, people give me strange glances…:P

    1. Yeah it was very easy to avoid 🙂 Just make mom lie.. these days you have no choice but to pick the call. Now everyone has a cell phone, even autowalas, vegetable vendors included 😛

    1. It was like the first time that I was going to a movie with friends in my own vehicle. I had no clue about the area where this theater was and it was pretty far too. And I got lost soon after we started. It would have been really tedious to ask directions at every intersection. Moreover the area has too much traffic. I would have definitely got lost in that mad rush, if I had attempted to go. So I just went home 🙂

  3. hey ….

your narration was so funny !

I didnt have a mobile till recently , only coz I felt I didnt want intrusion on my time … but then, the day I missed a bus as the bus driver couldn’t contact me to let me know the schedule has been changed, made me buy a mobile.

I’ve seen my uncle and all do so …. when they come from U.K, they travel around in a taxi everywhere coz they feel it is so cheap … hmmmppphhh !!! Earlier, I used to get irritated, but well, if they dont mind, and if the taxi guys make some money , well ok !

Next time a bank guy calls, give him/her a long story about the latest Abhishek-Aishwarya gossip .. that should shut them up

    Take Care

Oh yeah mobile has its own benefits and disadvantages too. It is beneficial, now I keep calling my mom, if she goes out and torture her the way she used to do. If someone gets late somewhere, it’s easier to call and find out.. In those days, we used to get so worried. 🙂
Hehe.. Ab-Aish gossip? that is a great idea 😉

  4. Once a similar movie experience happened to one classmate of mine ; he reached the theatre late (lost his way) and brought the roof down by yelling at the others who zoomed fast ahead without checking whether he was following. Yieekes it still scares me..he screamed & screamed as though he missed his flight to outer space ;-/
    LoL @ your elevator confusions..!!

Very true. Don’t know how people managed their lives without cellphones…. But sometimes I feel that those days were much better.

Just the other day, my friend was fuming about carrying a mobile as his colleague had easily woken him up from sleep and lend him charge of his ’emergency duty shift’ only to catch a movie with someone… 😀

About being embarassed, my Mom would always call up at my friends’ place to remind me that I had a home to return to…. Those landline days…. 🙂

I hope you are not driving on the right side of the road too…. 😀 😛

    1. Yep now it really feels impossible to live without cell phone but we did manage somehow in those days 🙂 Hehe..that colleague is clever huh.. assigning his duty is someone to catch a movie 🙂
Oh yeah my mom had called my friends’ place too lot of times and made me get embarrassed in from of them 😀
Initially I did drive on the wrong side of the road.. especially turnings were painful.. but now I have gotten used to it 🙂

  7. ROFL at the movie experienced. A gang of us 4 once went for a movie…all individually, promising to meet at the ticket counter. Finally, we all had to sit at 4 different places far from each other n watch it 😀

    1. 🙂 Hehehe.. that is funny.. sitting in 4 different places. I watched Avatar like that 😦 Sat alone and watched even though 3 of us went together. It reminds me of Seinfeld’s movie episode? Have you seen it? Do watch it if you can. It is too funny!!

  8. days without mobile phones are truly wonderful… There will be tension… You will never know who will turn up and who wont 🙂
The incident is funny… And still US hangover ah? Dont worry we are catching up them in food prices 😛 😛

  9. Haha! It happened a lot to me and my friends when we didn’t have our own mobile phones! And it irritated me when we were supposed to meet at a certain time and no one was there. It’d be like, “Were they here earlier and left me or they haven’t arrived yet?” Now that we have mobile phones, it’s a little bit better because it’s easier to find out where everyone is but it’s still irritating when no one comes on time. 😉

    1. 🙂 yep very true.. there was no way to find out if people arrived yet or not. It was really difficult to meet people in those days. Now it’s easier and people misuse it by not coming on time 🙂

  10. A mobile grants you the ability to be contacted at any place …at any time.
It can be a nuisance at times…but its more often helpful than not.
Btw for dealing with Telemarketers, check this Link:
Loved your story…curious as to which 2 movies were these 😀

    1. Yeah these days I find mobile as being more of a nuisance than of any use 🙂 Checked the link.. thanks for the link 🙂 I guess one of the movies was Black and I dont remember the other movie. 🙂

  11. lol @ what you said about habits in India and US. Not only these, but you also use your verbiage differently here.. for example, i have heard people asking for a ‘pop’ for glass of Pepsi..

  12. Earlier, we could still easily find our friends… when mobiles werent there, me and my friends always make sure that we communicate a place known to all to meet up incase we got separated and it has worked. its not one or two, but on many occasions we have got lost but managed to get together… at this central place and then move on… you ppl should have done that, but now point it talking past… but yes, being mobile now we dont think of these things, but insist on calling the other person and being more restless waiting…

    Like

    1. Oh that is a good idea to meet at a place rather than following each other. Yeah we could have done that but it was like the first time I went with friends for a movie from college 🙂 Hence the effect.. After that whenever we went for a movie, it has been successful and hopefully, we dint get lost again. Yeah agree on restlessness now that we have mobile phones. Even if a person is late by 5 mins, people would have called him 50 times 😀

and the conversion he hehe i do the same divide by 75 or 80… but if you realise they are not cheap its almsot the same price on a bigger picture

    excellent blog u go 🙂

    1. Oh for you too?! I thought my father was the only one who used to embarrass me like that. Even your father had the curfew in effect is it? 🙂 Yep these days I embarrass my mom by calling her or searching for her if she gets late in coming home. And I dont think you are here for the first time. I have read many posts of yours, remember? And even you have commented on many of my earlier posts 🙂
