Back to the Society

I am back with a post (after err..3 weeks?). I have not read any of the blogs. I have to catch up on other blogs too. There was a time when I had nothing much to do and now I am suddenly getting boggled with work. I was stuck in a training and as soon as I am back, I have hell lot of work to finish 😦

We had a session where we were supposed to write the activities that we like doing the most and using them find a dream job. Funnily, I just had eat, sleep, watch TV, movies etc on my list. I felt the best job which will allow me to do these activities would be that of a housewife. Later on, I found out that all the other girls had the same ‘dream job’ too. 🙂 Only one girl had the dream of winning a beauty pageant. There was a time when I wanted to do this and that but now I guess I am tired of all the running. Hopefully will get out of this phase soon.

One good thing that I did in these days is something that I wanted to do from a very long time. Our group went to a community service center in the town and we did some voluntary social service. It was quite tiring but I really had such a great feeling later on. I felt like I did something to the society. Earlier I had donated all my old clothes to such a center when I changed my city, but this time I was working there as a volunteer.

This center provides food, clothing and other basic stuff to the homeless and other economically backward people. Some of us worked at the clothing section and the rest of us were at the food section. My job was at the clothing section. I had to hang clothes to the hangers and pick up any clothes lying on the floor. I also had to remove empty hangers lying around. The clothes section was open for the needy people. These poor families could take any clothes they liked. Almost everyone of them spoke Spanish and they tried speaking to me in Spanish. I could not understand and just shook my head in reply. Some people even helped me pick up empty hangers, which was a very sweet act from their side. But my legs started paining and I realized the fate of salespeople in malls, where I mercilessly throw clothes around after trying. It is kinda painful to put clothes onto the hanger, since it is an endless job 🙂 You keep folding some of them but many more keep getting unfolded. Finally, we were done!

They usually donate clothes twice a year, once in Jan and once some time later. Hence there were too many people standing in line to enter the clothing section. They also provide free education to the poor. I could see computer classes going on in various rooms. I also heard that almost 2000 families turned towards the center for help in just nov-dec time-frame, which means that 2000 families who were able to feed themselves, needed help now. This recession can have such a bad effect on the society 😦 I felt bad seeing people standing in line for food and clothing. What was worse was to see very small kids starving and wearing ragged clothes. The food was left-overs which the restaurants/shops donate. Most of the food was already expired, some of them even 2 months back. I made a decision to donate anything that I do not need to this organization. I will never throw anything, instead will try to donate it to such people in need. I cant wait to get back to this center again and do whatever I can for the poor.

Donate anything and everything that can be donated. Please do not throw your old clothes and shoes!!!

  2. You are a good girl, Ashwini. Here, some van from some organisation comes to collect old clothes twice a month. They take anything and everything. We, I won’t say the word ‘donate’, because we are giving away unwanted things, give them whatever we keep aside – extra things – to them.

Its nice of u to do this one .. I give away stuff way before they get worn out .. I don’t want to give it off just bcoz the colour hs faded or they r torn or something like that 🙂
If I buy some new ones, I usually make sure I compensate for that by giving away old but good ones .. nice idea to go shopping that is 😛 😛

    1. Thanks Swaram 🙂 Missed reading your posts a lot 🙂 I have lot of your posts to read now 🙂 That’s so sweet of you to donate clothes that way! Not many people do that, you know. Yeah now even I do that. It gives a very good reason to buy new clothes 😀

  4. That’s something really nice to do. What you saw was only a small fraction of the countless troubled people on our planet.

I wish we all could stop cribbing about our lives and spare a thought, even if just for a few minutes every day, for all such needy people…

  5. Whattay comeback miss!!!!:-) Happy is me!

That’s a noble thing to do. I relate to it as my mother has been doing it since we were kids..it sort of passed on to us now. So you see, when I open my cupboards and clothes start tumbling out, my BP shoots and I start discarding left right and centre;-)

Could understand what you went through when you saw kids in line for food etc. Makes us feel like what we do is but a drop in the ocean.

That’s a nice thing that you do. Even mom used to give away clothes as soon as my cupboard would overflow 🙂
Yeah it’s really sad to see these things happen and then feel bad that we cannot much about it 😦

    1. 🙂 Thanks. Welcome to my blog!!! 🙂
If you dont donate, I guess it goes into a garbage can or something and nobody can use it. People may or may not recycle it. But if you donate, someone else can use it. Someone who cannot afford to buy new clothes can wear the same thing that you had and then, throw it once its life is over 🙂
