Yeah, well, I am direction impaired. I dont have any sense of the direction in which I am going or where I am after sometime. I need to travel in a road for atleast 2-3 times in order to get a sense of it. And I read somewhere that even an animal like Cow can make out where it is. 😳 So that makes me worse than them. Thankfully, now I have an Iphone with GPS in it and that would help me in not getting lost. The first time I went to my class, I got lost. I went in a completely opposite direction searching for an intersection which did not exist. After about 45 mins, I got an idea that it might be in the other direction of the road 😛 (better late than never) and I found that road in 5 mins in the other direction. Getting lost in the city is a common phenomenon for me.

Recently during my visit to Seattle, I met a couple of my friends who were also kinda direction impaired and we had loads of fun. My friend was supposed to pick me from the airport and he came promptly on time. As we were going out of the airport, the GPS asked him to take a right turn . By the time the GPS told, we had crossed that street. So he took the next right turn which took us back to the airport.. So we made one full round of the airport 🙄 .. Then this time he followed the GPS instructions and took the right turn, but still we went back to the airport. Again one full round of the airport.. The GPS had also become direction impaired for sometime .. After trying all the possible turns and making some 3-4 rounds of the airport 😐 , we finally thought it was better to not take any turns and head straight.. Thankfully, this decision helped us in getting out of the airport.

The next day, my another friend and I headed towards a falls and with you-know-who driving (Me, ofcourse!) 😀 .. After driving for sometime, we started hunting for restaurants along the freeway(highway).. My friend spotted an Ihop board ➡ and she was like “A, lets eat at Ihop”.. I promptly took the exit and headed in the direction of the arrow mark.. After crossing a couple of intersections, we saw “Burger King”.. I said “D, lets grab a burger”.. She said “No, lets eat at Ihop”.. Even I like Ihop better so we thought of searching Ihop.. I saw a blue building and said “Hey looks like it’s there” and kept driving.. It turned out to be some other building, after all.. after crossing a couple of more streets, the road we were on became narrow and windy. It was leading us to some hill. So hastily, I took a right turn just to realize that even that road was heading to another hill 😕  Then I decided to head back.. I took an awkward reverse so that I can come back to the old road and waited for the signal to go green so that I could take a U-turn.. Then I saw what I should have seen before.. “A cop car”.. “D, a cop, a cop, a cop”.. I was so scared that the cop saw me break 10 rules at once.. Thankfully he saw that I was lost and forgave me (probably and hopefully). Then I took a U-turn and we decided we will eat at Burger King. As I headed back, after sometime we realized that I missed the turning for Burger King as well 👿 .

“It is not the man who has little, but he who desires more, that is poor.”

Then my friend said, lets get back to highway, since we found neither Burger King nor IHop. So we went straight on that road. Correct guess, I missed the highway entrance too and went straight ahead ❗ Then I thought I will take a U-turn this time and come back and join the highway properly.. I came across a signal and was waiting to take a U-turn.. I turned my head with mice playing football inside my stomach and 💡 VOILA!!! I saw IHop board on the left.. The IHop for which we searched for almost half an hour was standing right next to me as if by magic!! We were surprised and happy too..It was a good thing that I lost the turning for Burger King and lost my highway entrance too..We were giggling our way into IHop..

Moral: Everything happens for a good reason.. and sometimes, being direction impaired helps you indirectly in a different manner 😉

  2. My head was reeling the way you were going round and round! 😀
I am not at all direction impaired so much so that when I drive the person in the passenger seat has to continuously about which turn to take! That too from a minute ahead of the actual turn. 😛
However, I’m better on foot or someone else’s car! 😀
Lovely narration. And I am stalking you back!! 🙂

  6. 🙂 Well, if you ended up into IHop (or even if you had ended up at Burger King), I wouldn’t consider you ‘direction impaired’ at all… 😀

As for me, strangely, I don’t seem to forget my way once I’ve been through one. And also I manage to find a new place without much fuss too. (some sort of in-built GPS, maybe… :D)

  8. You reminded me of a trip to Atlanta when I was the ‘navigator’ and interpreting the GPS also the google map instruction but kept going round and round as the GPS say “Turn right/Turn left in .2 miles” by the time that right/left turn is gone… yet another time we had the GPS battery dead yet we could reach our destination just following the road signs 😀

  9. I am laughing loudly, reading this funny post of yours, Ashwini. Maybe, it is not funny at all! You must have gone through so much tension before being awarded by iHop! But I feel that if you have a good friend along with you, these mishaps become a happy adventure, right? ‘Whatever happens, happens for good’! You are 100% right!

  10. Nicely Narrated.I too had a bitter experience with GPS once. My friend would argue with the female voice from GPS, whenever it say “Recalculating ” … Never trust this GPS.

  12. I am generally very good with directions :P. Or atleast I am not that bad like you :P. In NZ I was supposed to go this place with world’s longest name. To reach there had two options. One take long fast route or tougher, smaller scenic route. I took the second one. Then my guide book said 4.3 kms after the sign post, take right, go straight up, take left after 3 kms and you will see the sign. I travelled for 2.5hrs straight. Took lot of pics and saw NZ wild, passed through all the beautiful villages. Finally the supposed to be sign post is right behind a big tree and 85-90% of the vistors miss that sign post.

I didn’t set my tachometer to get the distance right and drove past the last village in that route :|. So it was all non tarmac road for approx 3kms. I went up a hill too :O. Right on top of the hill :P, I realized I might have missed a turn. I guess even those sheeps would have laughed at me :P. Took some pics and slept for half an hour and came back to the last village en route. I asked the bar lady for the route, then she said you are not the first one to miss that turn :P(was so relived with that, but she laughed at me when I said I saw that hill). I purchased a lunch, a strong ice cold cuppa and drove back.

Awesome experience. Not many Indians would back pack to NZ. Let alone to Eastern parts, let alone to that place and in that route and get lost :P. So ya, Bravo experience for me. Bar lady said not many Caucasian come this side of NZ. She even gave me one Apple and one Kiwi fruit. So it’s not that bad to be an Indian and getting lost eh?.

    1. Hehehe. oh my god! you went to the top of a hill. Were you all alone? 😮 it will be dangerous right, going like that to some unknown place? What if you had lost your way back from that hill 😛 You will never know. what if someone had mugged you and taken all your money? 😮 I think what you did was really risky!!!

      1. That’s life. What’s the guarantee that you will survive tomorrow?. So many if’s and but’s right?. So all you do is go and enjoy life as it’s your last day(wish I could say that everyday).

Lol the other side of the hill was all forest and river passing through it :P. So no way I would have gone any further. People in NZ are generally are really nice, especially in rural areas. Auckland might be the least safest city in NZ, rest all are awesome.

There is always risk traveling alone, which I was more than willing to take. As NZ was my dream destination. I told you about my NZ/Cambodia/Thai traveling experience eh?. I was traveling alone for 45 days and last 15 days dad, mom and bro joined in Thailand.

I used to carry only what was required. So worst case they would have got 100NZ-250NZ. Which is no big if I had lost it. You would end up seeing more possums and sheeps than NZers. So it’s no big deal to travel alone in NZ I guess.

      2. That’s true. Good that you enjoyed. NZ is a beautiful place to visit and I am happy that you dint skip it, after going so close. Yep you told me about your trip but I dint know that you were backpacking alone! Cool so mom, dad saw Thailand too. You dint tell me that! If NZ is safe then no problem. Here there are plenty of chances of getting mugged and downtowns especially are not at all safe to go alone. Why dont you write a travelogue huh? of your trip?

  13. I think this is the best thing to do when you’re walking around downtown (of any city). Just forget the map: follow the roads, the buildings, the smell (of food!). There are so many more interesting things to see / do / hear / smell that way!

    Awesome post!
